Social Responsibility

As New Zealand — and in particular Auckland — grow, so does our responsibility to make sure it happens in a sustainable way. We’re proud to play our part in future-focused land and infrastructure development that protects the environment and helps communities thrive. In practical terms, that means reducing our impact, improving efficiency, procuring with care, building positive partnerships, and investing in people.

Change is always a challenge. But it’s one we’re not shying away from. Because that’s part of who we are — never afraid to challenge the status quo, and always up for a challenge ourselves. We’re on a journey — constantly learning, refining and improving as we go. We’re making the effort so we can make more positive impacts on the places and communities we work in.

Sustainability

Improving our energy efficiency (and thereby reducing carbon emissions) makes both commercial and environmental sense. So we’re doing both — and we’re making good headway towards our 20% emissions reduction target. We’ve invested in electric vehicles and solar powered site offices, adopted fleet analytics and trained our drivers and operators to maximise fuel efficiency, and switched to an electricity supplier that’s 100% carbon neutral.

Decarbonisation is a particularly big challenge for our industry, especially given the machinery we use. But it needs to be tackled nonetheless, and we’re keen to lead from the front.  So we’re always seeking out greater efficiencies and adopting new technologies. Together with our clients, suppliers, regulators and supply chain, we’re proud be a part of transforming and decarbonising our industry.

We treat environmental protection as a core part of every job, and it’s something we’re proud to be pretty good at. We have strong capabilities and extensive experience, backed by a track record of top council compliance and both our ISCA accreditation and ISO 14001:2015 certification. For example, we have experience in repairing broken land, working around sensitive ecosystems, dealing with hazardous substances and earthmoving large areas of exposed soil while minimising offsite discharges.

Our team bring unmatched expertise in both the design and compliance monitoring of a wide range of environmental aspects, so clients can be confident we’ve got it covered, not matter what stage the project is at. From management plans to alternative solutions for ESC measures, from high-frequency auditing to exceeding compliance requirements, from winter site works approvals to training and engagement — we do what it takes, and more, to leave the land in a better state than when we found it.

We’re serious about reducing waste and growing value — for our business, for our clients, and for our environment. We’re also well aware that in this industry, it’s vital to remain cost competitive. Because if we don’t get the job, we can’t improve anything. That’s why we’re focusing on reviewing procurement contracts, optimising processes, undertaking recycling, and always looking for new ways to do more with less.

To date, we’ve saved over $250,000 in procurement and diverted 222 tonnes of material from landfill. And we’ve achieved this through initiatives like using low carbon concrete and recycled aggregate, waste separation and reuse, reducing transport emissions through local sourcing, compliance and community engagement, and gap analysis to ensure compliance with our benchmarks.

Initiatives

From big shifts to small changes, we’re doing what we can to lower our impact and improve sustainability right across our business. These are just some of the initiatives we’re working on.

Switch to Synthetic Oils

In 2017, we phased out mineral oils and went fully synthetic across our entire business. Synthetic oils improve fuel efficiency, reduce engine wear, and keep our machines in better shape for longer. That means less maintenance, less waste, and less downtime. They also last longer between changes, so we use less oil overall. And since they’re more energy efficient, they help reduce our greenhouse gas emissions too.

Powered with Ecotricity

We’ve switched on to a greener energy supply. Our head office (and most of our sites) are now powered by 100% renewable electricity from Ecotricity – the only power company in New Zealand sourcing electricity from Toitū climate positive certified wind, hydro and solar. This is a key part of reducing our Scope 2 emissions.

Low Carbon Concrete Mixes

The opportunity to undertake a systematic study at Middlemore Rail Station helped us test and understand how to make the most of low carbon concrete blends. We now use them throughout our supply chain, including in projects like Point Chevalier to Westmere, leading the way in our industry and reducing our Scope 3 emissions.

Decarbonisation Efforts

From trialling solar-powered site offices to rolling out new, fuel-efficient machinery, we’re making decarbonisation inherent in how we operate. We’ve built a custom fleet management system to enable more efficient tracking, scheduling and maintenance of our entire fleet, we’re replacing old vehicles with new, and we’re replacing fossil fuel powered tools with battery-powered options wherever we can.

Big EV

Big EV is our fully electric traffic management truck, built in partnership with SEA Electric and funded by EECA. It’s an industry-first build that takes a traditional diesel Isuzu FSD700 and replaces it with SEA’s modular electric drive system. With 165km of range and tech that updates over the air, it’s already outperforming its diesel cousin – and paving the way for what’s possible in heavy-duty EVs for our industry.

Environmental Optimisation Tools

We’ve developed a suite of smart tools to help us make better (and faster) decisions for the environment. From chemical treatment calculators to real-time rainfall alerts, these tools help us stay one step ahead. We’re also exploring IoT-based sediment controls and smarter chemical distribution systems to reduce runoff and protect sensitive ecosystems.

Sustainable Partnerships

We know that strong partnerships create the best outcomes. Like-minded people and partners, working together towards common goals.

That’s why we team up with businesses and organisations who share our values and vision of a more sustainable future.

Sustainable Business Network

The Sustainable Business Network (SBN) is a network consisting of hundreds of progressive organisations that collective invest in and act on system change, focusing on climate, waste and water. Dempsey Wood is proud to be an Investor for Impact, helping fund essential work on system change while leveraging SBN’s network and resources to improve our own sustainability practices.

Mutu

Mutu is the #1 resource sharing tool in Australasia. A platform that helps businesses track, measure and reduce waste and procurement impact, it’s empowering companies to reveal, reuse and report on the resources across their organisations. Dempsey Wood partners with Mutu to drive circularity, track material reuse and maximise efficiency – helping us divert hundreds of tonnes of material from landfill.

Inclusion + Diversity

We’re always looking for ways to uplift the communities we work in. A big part of this is our commitment to procurement that creates prosperity and positive socio-economic outcomes. We’re doing this by partnering with suppliers who uphold high environmental and social responsibility standards, restoring natural resources and culturally significant areas, sponsorships and community-driven projects, backing initiatives like waste recovery hubs and wellbeing programs, and promoting local employment pathways.

We’re proud to work with diverse suppliers and we’ve set clear targets around subcontracting to Māori, Pasifika, and women-owned businesses. We actively engage with minority-owned businesses to drive inclusivity and economic empowerment. And we back all this with action — for example through our Amotai Aukōkiri membership and our strong established partnerships with mana whenua.

We take safety seriously. At Dempsey Wood, it’s never just a box to tick, it’s a core element of our social and sustainable responsibility. Of course it’s about keeping our people safe on sites. But it’s also more than that — it’s a broader attitude and accountability that brings the benefits of safety to the partners we work with and the communities we work in.

We embed safety into everything we do, every day. We invest in regular training programs to so that our employees are equipped with the skills and behaviours needed to ensure the safety of themselves and those around them. We also take safety beyond the site, investing in community safety initiatives and engagement programmes that promote safety awareness and raise the standard for safety across our industry.

That’s the Dempsey Wood way. Working together,
on tomorrow.
